SCRIPTURE READINGS:

First Reading (2Kgs: 5:14-17).
On being cured of leprosy, Naaman comes to believe in the true God, and is lavish in his gratitude towards the prophet Elisha.

Second Reading (2 Tim 2:8-13).
Paul tells Timothy that the work of preaching the Gospel will result in hardship, opposition and persecution.

Gospel (Lk 17:11-19).
The story of ten people who were cured of leprosy by Jesus, and how only one came back to thank him.
The First Reading tells how on being cured of leprosy Naaman acknowledges Yahweh as the supreme and only God. However, when he tries to express his gratitude to Elisha, the prophet refuses to accept it, because it would suggest that the cure was due to him rather than to God. As commander of the Syrian army, Naaman was a Gentile. This story prepares us for the Gospel account of the cure of ten lepers by Jesus, and of how only one of them , a foreigner (a Samaritan), came back to thank him. The stranger puts the Jews to shame. His reaction anticipates the glad reception of the Good News by the Samaritans in Acts 8: 1-25.

If you are keen or just curious, then please attend a one-off 90 minute briefing presented by More Than Gold, the umbrella Christian charity serving the 2012 Games, during their Nationwide Vision Tour. ? Hear how churches responded at previous Games, from Atlanta to Beijing
